NIGERIA: Feed now or Hunger

I recently wrote a minor examination and I could not help but notice the whispers of malpractice that filled the room. I had no choice but to conceal my work, become deaf and dumb just to maintain a level of integrity. This event, among many others leaves me with a sense of loneliness in a crowd.  With the increasing number of comments on social media geared towards a desire for change in Nigeria, I would choose to believe that there are many others with whom I share the vision of a poverty free Nigeria, a business friendly, innovative and peaceful nation.

Corruption is a norm and with no apologies has indeed become a cliché.  It has become our daily bread, drink and undeniably the only way to an average Nigerian man’s heart. Even the common man who points fingers at the government at every chance to blame , floats in this polluted atmosphere.
The purifier sects have not escaped as they have been forced to inhale the stench and look upon the remains of the filth. Once, while refusing a gift from a client for doing my job I felt dizzy and awkward from pressure as I stood my ground with everyone chorusing “Take it!! Take it!!”. The man rummaging the waste bin for supplies would curse me if he heard I refused the ‘bread’. Wealth and fame in these times seem to be the only motivation to work and live life. We no longer look up to the ‘faith of our fathers’ but we bask in wishful thinking and are so busy doing nothing. Actually, and in the real sense of it we get busy talking and talking but not ‘doing the talk’.
We dwell in the shadows of cruel men all in the name of connections, sharing the ‘bread of destruction’ or at least relishing the comfort of the feel of a sense of belonging. I am not against interactions but in order to hit the nail on the head this would be a subject for another day.

Our country is in need of  individuals who have  the strength of a good character and a fit dose of compassion amongst other leadership qualities. Leaders who can differentiate good governance from  their religious beliefs as well as their meal times and portions.
We are not in need of leaders who wine and dine in excess, have loud mouths, dance and exercise to the music of their spoils and still are not physically, mentally nor spiritually fit.
I look forward to leaders who are focused to balance on all sides no matter how thin the rope.

King David did not just defeat Goliath because he was physically fit nor did he tear the lion and bear apart because he had the best negotiating power nor could he talk the beasts out of devouring his sheep . He only had a few words to convince King Saul and did not bother about the bliss of a cheap conversation with the giant that threatened the lives of his people. All he had was his faith, compassion for his people, strength and character that was cultivated and had grown in his heart. His plan was smooth, calculated and sent the giant tripping.

A 7year old told me he wants to become a mechanic and I almost told him to shut his mouth as I feared for his chances of  success in the future. But then, I pinched myself  as I encouraged him to get good grades at school if he wanted a big workshop. I prayed for him because I knew the majority would never think nor pride themselves in engaging in such a noble profession in these times.  I look forward to a Nigeria in which we would have equal access to opportunities.

Little can be done to save the sheep if the shepherd is clueless.
I feel pity for those who have tried, who had a good plan but were misunderstood. The many others who have sincere motives and great plans, and have decided to occupy, I cannot ask you to wait till it is better.

You may be faced with the choice of Starvation or eating of the 'bread'
If the former you choose then,
You would learn to walk alone, and move with your head because the world remains upside down,
it would hurt sometimes as even your loved ones may alienate you
but you must keep at it, you must occupy and help many across the valley of deceit to our future of  peace, progress, love and light.

How many Layers do you have?

I have been going through tweets by my friends in the past few minutes.
Reading tweets by people sometimes is like watching their lives on a screen, at least for those who have something to say per second.

This one in particular caught my attention and you may ask me why? " I am examining the layers of my life". It tickled my fancy and so I replied " How many layers do you have?".

Now back to the reason why the question caught my attention. It reminded me of the study of the skin in biology class. In elementary school we learned about the two main layers of the skin, the Dermis and the Epidermis. We had to draw simple diagrams but as we progressed into senior class in secondary school we had to do more complex diagrams showing, blood vessels connective tissues, sweat glands, sweat pores, hair follicles, oily glands and so on.
I can remember the first time I glanced at a more detailed diagram of the skin how dizzy I felt instantly. I would not say I was scared but I would rather flip over to the next page and study something else because I felt it was too complicated for me to understand let alone know all its layers and functions.

The skin is the largest organ of the human body. Our skin reflects the types of genes we possess, and our state of health either good or bad. The blood vessels contain nutrients and all the requirements to help protect us from UltraViolet rays, extreme temperatures, injury and infections.

To drive the story home, self examination is useful, as many times as we get the chance.

Just as we exercise, ensure an adequate daily diet for nourishment, a bath and we use cosmetics and all kinds of skin care products, we need to feed ourselves daily with thoughts and get involved in activities that would shed out excellence.

We are to borrow from the past, the experiences that polish us.
Forget the failures and only using them as a sponge to scrub the dead layers off our "life skin"

Once again the inspiring tweet " I am examining the layers of my life" I answer this time
"I am examing the layers of my life too!"

Where were we?

The fact that I have not been able to access the internet with my
laptop has just been the right excuse for me to neglect my blog(not
justifying myself) although I've had loads of interesting events and
days of my life in the past months.
I hope to find the right words to narrate the tales of my Nigerian
Youth Service Corp Orientation camp on KM 27 Mallam Sidi Gombe State.
I can only but for now describe those three weeks as most interesting,
eventful, fantastic, life changing and hilarious. I must say that the
whole idea of the NYSC is superb, the fun, the lessons drawn, the
independence and realisations.
At the time of this composition, we have already experienced floodings
in two major cities (Lagos and Ibadan), two bombings (police
headquarters and united nations building) in Abuja and we still face
threats from a terrorist body (bokoharem) of which we cannot place one
face to.
We cannot trust our national security nor our government as they have
not respected us. You cannot walk casually into a shop on Ojuelegba
road or on Adeniran Ogunsanya Surulere without beckoning on the
attendant because they are under lock and key even at the peak of the
buisness hours.
Our country cannot boast of possessing data that gives current
information of atleast one quarter of its populace. Most parents and
guardians would have sleepless nights for one year till their loved
ones return from a service "under the sun or in the rain, with
dedication and selflessness" to a people that do not acknowledge them.

Away from the ordeals, it is nice to know that I can now post my
thoughts whenever via the mobile network.

Unity Schools Old Students Association

The Unity Schools Old Students Association had one of her meetings, an evening event on the June 19, 2011 at the Lagoon Restaurant Victoria Island Lagos to discuss topical issues in our Educational system and Unity of our country.
Everyone got the chance to introduce themselves formally.
Queens College Old girls had the Oldest Student (Senior Yinka-  OGQC class of '57) and the youngest student representative (Me).
Vital points were raised on how to help the present situation in our educational system and how members of USOSA can get involved to ensure our schools become centers of excellence, national integration and leadership development.
I had fun too.

Save us!!!! My thoughts

Have you ever wondered what would happen at the company you work for if you died? They would simply
hire someone or probably a team in a couple of days to finish off from where you left.

Have you taken out time to think about those who would be most affected when you are gone?.The ones who cannot hire another to take your place and no matter how great the intervention may never recover?

These days our minds are flooded and crammed with, meeting work obligations, setting the perfect example for our employees becoming world class heroes and what amount of money is, or is not streaming into our bank accounts. 90% of our sense of livelihood is derived from the pursuit of happiness, building business networks and how much time and energy we must invest to become eligible retirees at 40. We are so busy with getting up early and resting so late. Do we ever have time to think for ourselves? No family time. Even Christmas holidays are intruded by work calls and it’s even easier these days with mobile technology.
Making ends meet and achieving our goals are very necessary but, what happens to our children’s sense of moral values, their mental and psychological development. Do your loved ones really feel loved and protected? Can they find a friend and a true counselor in you? Are you even there?

There’s really a lot on my mind and I have really been trying hard to put them all down. We are all guilty of these ills.
Would we ever be able to leave a worthy legacy for those who look up to us? Or are we just living to make ends meet?
Make out good time and win normal life!!!!

Snippets from the Ancient City

I did see things from a different perspective in Oyo State, and it was a good retreat from the buzz of Lagos State.
I was compelled to do a mental comparison between   Oyo State and other states I have been to based on the environment and the people I had the opportunity of interacting with.
Two days and one night in Oyo and I already figured;

  • Some things come really easy in some places
  • Motion does not necessarily mean action
  • A team with one mind would take 6 flights of stairs at a go, even while holding hands.

Thanks to the best colleagues I  did have a nice time, got more ideas and  new ways to be effective.
More details coming soon.
